The article examines one quodlibet of thomas of sutton (c. 1287 a. d.) and compares it with a quodlibet of william of ockham (d. 1349 a. d.). both attack the position of henry of ghent on the distinction between essence and existence. and both reach opposite conclusions. thomas of sutton argued that the distinction is a real one, while ockham saw it only as nominal and connotative. the opposing views stem from different epistemologies and different metaphysics.

Numerous social, economic and academic pressures can have a negative impact on representations of biomedical research. We review several of the forces playing an increasingly pernicious role in how health and science information is interpreted, shared and used, drawing discussions towards the role of narrative. In turn, we explore how aspects of narrative are used in different social contexts and communication environments, and present creative responses that may help counter the negative trends. Glossina or tsetse flies, the vectors of sleeping sickness, form a unique group of insects with remarkable characteristics. They are viviparous with a slow rhythm of reproduction (one larva approximately every 10 days) determined by the regular ovulation of alternate ovaries. This unusual physiology enables the age of the females to be estimated by examining the ovaries.The resulting ovarian age structure of tsetse fly populations has been used to develop research into the demography of tsetse flies. Several authors have proposed (...) methods of estimating population growth rates from ovarian age distribution data. However, such methods are applicable only when the growth rate () is equal to 1 (i.e. the intrinsic rate of increase r is equal to 0). The contrast between the reception of Anselm’s Proslogion in the work of Bonaventure and in the work of Thomas Aquinas is often held up as a classic example of their competing intellectual assumptions. A common strategy unites much that philosophers have written about the virtues. The strategy can be traced back at least to Aristotle, who suggested that human beings have a characteristic function or activity, and that the virtues are traits of character which enable humans to perform this kind of activity excellently or well. The defining feature of this approach is that it treats the virtues as functional concepts, to be both identified and justified by reference to some independent goal or (...) end which they enable people to attain. Some recent philosophers seem to have hoped that by following this perfectionist strategy, we might attain a more convincing account of our moral practices than rule-based theories of ethics have been able to provide. De ces noms, seul celui de Péladan n'évoque plus un livre précis pour nos contemporains. Certains se souviennent d'un auteur de la fin du siècle dernier qui s'était rendu célèbre par ses extravagances vestimentaires : son pourpoint Renaissance et sa barbe à l'assyrienne dans le Paris de la Belle Epoque défrayait la chronique. Les journalistes ont aussi consacré une large place à ses démêlés avec d'autres occultistes. Ses salons (...) de la Rose-Croix, pour lesquels Satie composa des sonneries, eurent une grande renommée et sont importants pour qui s'intéresse à l'histoire de l'art. Péladan, avec un sens certain de la publicité, s'était proclamé S.A.R., titre assyrien qui en faisait un descendant mythique des Mages chaldéens. C'est ce titre qui a assuré sa notoriété jusqu'à nos jours. D'androgynes pervers en femmes violées, mêlant la magie aux thèmes décadents, ses romans présentent un tableau étonnant de la pensée fin de siècle. Ce texte veut démontrer que Joséphin Péladan, qui eut des admirateurs comme Jarry ou Paul Valéry, n'était pas qu'un dandy excentrique, un farfelu 1900 teinté d'ésotérisme mais un authentique écrivain. Il existe un récit de Borgès qui raconte l'histoire d'un peintre qui voulut faire un tableau de l'univers. Au bout de nombreuses années de travail, il avait peint un mur entier de personnages pour s'apercevoir qu'en fait il n'avait peint que son propre visage. Ce fut précisément la destinée de Péladan : l'auteur ne fit plus qu'un avec son personnage principal du Mage. Jamais son œuvre n'aura présenté une telle fusion entre imaginaire et réalité. (shrink)

Accounts of moral reasoning have tended either to ignore the differences in what men count as good reasons for their moral judgments, or, in emphasizing these differences, to imply that anything whatsoever can count as a moral reason. This book shows that both of these positions rest on a mistaken assumption, and by rejecting this assumption brings out important features of moral discourse. Although moral disagreement is seen to be far more radical than empirical disagreement, a framework of agreement is (...) shown to be a precondition of moral discourse, and even of the possibility of individual moral decision. A type quantifier F is symmetric iff F ( X, X )( Y ) = F ( Y, Y )( X ). It is shown that quantifiers denoted by irreducible binary determiners in natural languages are both conservative and symmetric and not only conservative.

While in principle probabilistic logics might be applied to solve a range of problems, in practice they are rarely applied at present. This is perhaps because they seem disparate, complicated, and computationally intractable. However, we shall argue in this programmatic paper that several approaches to probabilistic logic into a simple unifying framework: logically complex evidence can be used to associate probability intervals or probabilities with sentences.

SummaryThis article argues that Archibald Campbell's Necessity of Revelation can be viewed as the first application of the ‘science of human nature’, a characteristic branch of the Scottish Enlightenment, to the study of religious belief. Adopting Baconian and Newtonian methodological principles, Campbell set hypotheses, collected historical data, and inferred conclusions about the capabilities of human nature to come to fundamental religious ideas without the aid of revelation. He did so not only to reject the ‘deist’ position on the powers of (...) unassisted human reason, associated with Matthew Tindal's Christianity as Old as the Creation, but also to refute Campbell's conservative critics within the Church of Scotland who had earlier tried him for heresy. Campbell's example is that of a university professor using the experimental study of religion to defeat both radical freethinking and Calvinist orthodoxy. His work is another instance of the complicated relationship between science and religion within eighteenth-century Scotland. (shrink)
